National Immunisation Awareness Month

July 2018:

The United States focuses on immunisation awareness during the month of August. At Aetna International, we’re taking this opportunity to raise global awareness of the importance of immunisations for individuals of all ages. The topic deserves year-round focus around the world.

Vaccinations provide safe protection against a spectrum of illnesses — from influenza (flu) to seasonal illness to serious diseases — to people of all ages throughout their lives. It’s especially important for people to get the flu vaccine and ensure their vaccines are up-to-date prior to international travel.

Flu and pneumonia

Child care and pre-school facilities and schools are prone to outbreaks of disease. Poor hand washing, people’s failure to cover their mouths when coughing and sneezing, and other social interactions can lead to diseases such as flu being spread with ease. One of the most important things parents can do to protect their children’s health is getting them vaccinated according to a recommended immunisation schedule.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that children receive annual flu vaccines starting at age 6 months. All adults should consider getting the vaccine every year to protect against seasonal flu. It’s especially important for adults aged 65 and older, children under the age of five, and those with long-term medical conditions like asthma, heart-disease and diabetes to protect themselves against flu viruses.

Pregnant women should get the flu vaccine during pregnancy if they have not already received it for the current flu season prior to pregnancy because it protects them and their babies by preventing illnesses and complications. Breastfeeding mothers should also receive it. Read our vaccine guidance on flu and pneumonia.

Infectious diseases and international travel

Adults may need other vaccines such as hepatitis A, hepatitis B and HPV depending on their age, occupation, travel, medical conditions, vaccinations they have already received or other considerations. Our destination guides — which provide must-read information on what to consider before embarking on an international relocation — feature country-specific alerts from a disease and vaccination perspective. Access our destination guide library here.
