Discussing sustainable healthcare solutions at AmCham Singapore

On 12 March, Vibha Gandhi, Director of HR, Aetna International joined a Dr Alice Chu, Director of APAC Market Access at Glaukos Corporation, Dr Jeremy Lim, CEO and Co-founder of AMiLi, and Dr Alan Ong, Medical Director of AIA Singapore, to discuss “Sustainable Healthcare” at the American Chamber of Commerce in Singapore.

The topic of discussion was pertinent in the context of Singapore having the world’s longest life expectancy in 2017, with an expected lifespan at birth of 84.8 years. Although the average Singaporean enjoys a longer lifespan, their years spent in poor health has also increased.

The Singapore government has been doing more to meet growing demand from an aging population. However, employers and individuals will still have to think hard about how to adapt the healthcare system to a longer life expectancy, increased likelihood of chronic diseases like diabetes and hypertension, and an impending silver tsunami.

Vibha shared some of the choices we have made in Aetna Asia Pacific to break the vicious cycle of rising claims costs and higher premiums. For instance, we introduced telemedicine as a cost effective and time efficient way of treating a variety of health issues.  She also touched upon various policy changes such as negating the need for a medical certificate when only one sick day off is required and introducing a year-long well-being programme for employees. This has ultimately led to a behavioural shift that has been a win-win both for the organisation as well as employees.
