Living in the Bahamas—Population, Cost of Living, and Culture

Introduction

Located just off the coast of Cuba and Florida, the Bahamas is a sunny paradise rich in history and culture. As of mid-2025, the population is estimated at 403,000, with Nassau (the capital) home to over 270,000 residents. The country comprises more than 700 islands, but the majority of Bahamians live on New Providence, with Grand Bahama and Abaco also popular among expats. English is the official language, though French and Creole are also spoken, reflecting the islands’ diversity.¹

Cost of Living

The Bahamas continues to be one of the most expensive countries in Latin America. In 2025, the cost of living is about 38% higher than in the United States, with rent averaging 22% higher. A family of four can expect monthly expenses (excluding rent) of around $5,950, while a single person’s costs are about $1,640. Most goods are imported, driving up prices for everyday necessities. However, there is no income, capital gains, or estate tax, which can offset some of the high living costs for expats.²

Culture and Language

The Bahamas is home to a vibrant mix of cultures. While English is the official language, French and Creole are commonly spoken, especially among communities with roots in Haiti and other Caribbean nations. The islands are known for their lively festivals, music, and cuisine, which blend African, European, and indigenous influences.³
