Starting the work adventure

Finding work in China can be challenging, and having local contacts or working for a company with offices in China remains the most effective approach. As of 2023, the number of foreign residents in China has declined to approximately 711,000, reflecting stricter work permit regulations and changing economic conditions. Most expats work for multinational companies, and proficiency in Mandarin is increasingly important for securing competitive positions.¹

Key sectors with ongoing demand for foreign specialists include banking, accounting, law, teaching, and marketing.² The Chinese government has implemented a points-based work permit system, categorizing foreign workers into three groups: Class A for highly skilled professionals, Class B for those filling economic needs, and Class C for unskilled workers. This system, expanded nationwide in 2017, prioritizes language skills, age, and professional qualifications.³

To work legally in China, foreign nationals must obtain a Z-visa and register with the Public Security Bureau within 24 hours of arrival. A residence permit is required for stays longer than 180 days. Proof of academic qualifications and a clean criminal record are essential for the application process. Internships and work experience remain valuable pathways for those seeking employment after studying in China.⁴
