Before you consider making the move to Hong Kong, it’s wise to check the latest visa and immigration guidance. Entry requirements vary by nationality, so always confirm the rules that apply to your passport.
Entry and Work Visas
Currently, UK passport holders can stay in Hong Kong for up to six months without a visa. For most other nationalities, visa-free periods range from 7 to 180 days¹. If you wish to work in Hong Kong, you must apply for an employment visa before arrival. Visitor visas cannot be converted to work visas within Hong Kong; you must leave the territory and apply from abroad².
Employers are required to demonstrate to the Immigration Department that they have advertised the position locally and were unable to find a suitable candidate, often by submitting evidence of local job advertisements³.
Application Process
Most expatriates arrange their work visas through their employer. The employer submits the application, including proof of employment, salary, and benefits such as accommodation and health insurance. Processing typically takes four to eight weeks. Work visas are generally valid for two years and can be renewed. The visa becomes valid only when affixed to your passport and stamped upon entry².
Family and Dependents
After obtaining a work visa, you may apply for dependent visas for your spouse, children under 18, and parents over 60. Same-sex and common-law partnerships are not recognized under Hong Kong immigration law. You must prove you can support your dependents and that none have a criminal record. Spouses with dependent visas are permitted to work in Hong Kong².
If your employment ends, your work visa becomes invalid, but you may apply for a new visa with a different employer through a change of sponsorship application. After seven years of continuous residence, you may be eligible for permanent residency, allowing you to work without a visa².
