An expat's guide to Costa Rica

Costa Rica was named the second best place for expats in 2017 and is consistently cited in polls and lists for various benefits, from friendliness to climate. While natural beauty comes free, Americans and Europeans will find the cost of living comparable to home.

Costa Rica — which has had no standing army since 1949 — has made a name for its incredible wildlife (containing 4% of the world’s biodiversity), surfing, laid-back living and high quality of life. With its ‘pura vida’ lifestyle, Costa Rica has become an expat hotspot, with nearly as many people moving to start businesses as work part-time or retire.

While different people will always have different experiences of the same place, Costa Rica is as near to an expat paradise as the planet can deliver.
