Moving to France?

The French Health Care System

Number one in the world for its overall health system performance, France couldn’t be more highly rated by the World Health Organisation. The country boasts more than 1,000 regional hospitals and lacks the long waiting lists common both in the UK and Canada. If you hold a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC), you’ll have access to state-provided medical treatment. If not, you must consider private insurance before you relocate. But remember, the EHIC is not a substitute for health insurance, and doesn’t cover ongoing medical or non-urgent treatment, so if you’re planning a long-term stay in France you must make sure you have sufficient coverage.

Employment in France means entitlement to state health insurance but you’re required to pay up front for your treatment and around only 70% of this may be reimbursed. As an expat, you could also find that pre-existing or chronic conditions aren’t covered and, with the cost of general practitioners (GP), also known as medical practitioners, and specialist consultations in France due to rise, it’s even more important to ensure you have the necessary coverage. Many French nationals top up their state insurance with private health cover and expats might want to do the same.
