Since 2007, it has been mandatory for all expats to buy private health insurance from a registered insurer.
If you’re working in Germany, both you and your employer will pay into your health care insurance. But as a high-level expat earner, with an income of more than 4,000 Euros a month, you can opt out of state health insurance and take out your own private policy instead. Any policy must include everything your state insurance includes, such as cover for old age and chronic disease. This may well be a cheaper option for expats with high incomes, bringing with it all the benefits associated with private health care.
