The Italian Health Care System
Expats living in Italy have access to a public sector that offers good of health care. Even so, health care quality can vary from region to region. Citizens have universal coverage, with public health care free of charge at the point of service. Many Italians supplement public health care with private health care to make the best of both systems. While the cost of private care is high, most manage it using private medical insurance.
If you’re a European citizen just visiting Italy, you can take advantage of the reciprocal health care agreements, as long as you apply for a certificate of entitlement to treatment (E111 form) at least three weeks before arriving.
All those residing in Italy must have health insurance, you will not be issued a permit to stay without it. You have eight days to visit the local police station and present a health policy that is only valid within the duration of your stay. If you are not insured when you arrive, you will need to purchase INA ASSITALIA insurance. If you are employed in Italy, your employer is obliged to pay for your health insurance.
Visit the nearest local health authority (the Azienda SanitELocale ASL). To register with a doctor and receive your health card and a health number. Once you’re registered, you’ll be issued a health card and a health number. Your health card entitles you to free visits to your doctor.
You, like many expats, can supplement public health care with private health insurance cover. Benefits of this approach include the ability to choose your own doctor, receive treatment in a private hospital and avoid waiting for appointments. Many of Italy’s hospitals boast luxurious accommodations comparable to five-star hotels.
