The Japanese Health Care System

Like many developed nations, Japan has universal health cover for its citizens — but how it works depends on factors like whether you’re a citizen or visiting, age, etc. All residents are required by law to have health insurance — and those without it are liable for 100% of the costs of treatment.

Japan has two types of public health insurance:

• Social/Employee Health Insurance – provided to full-time employees through employers
• National Health Insurance – provided by the government.

Unlike many European systems, Japan has a smaller proportion of general practitioners and more specialists. When you’re sick or injured it’s necessary to choose a facility that specializes in your condition.

If you’re moving to Japan you must enrol in the system, once you have been in the country for one year. For foreign nationals residing in Japan for less than a year, international private medical insurance (iPMI) is recommended, but not compulsory.

If you’re entitled to stay in Japan for more than a year but aren’t covered by Employees' Health Insurance, you will need to apply for National Health Insurance. iPMI is also an option for those seeking comprehen
