According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), Singapore has the best health care system in the Asia-Pacific region and is ranked sixth globally in the WHO’s ranking of the world’s health systems.
The republic has become a centre for medical tourism. More than 400,000 people visit the country each year for treatment costs that are significantly lower than Europe and the US. Still, health care in Singapore can be expensive compared to other parts of Southeast Asia, especially if you don’t participate in the mandatory Medisave programme (national saving scheme) or the more comprehensive MediShield cover national health insurance programme.
Ten public hospitals in Singapore offer walk-in accident and emergency treatment, as do 13 private hospitals and some specialist clinics.
Many expats are offered health care by their employer as part of a salary or relocation package, but this may not include full coverage or be suitable for those with ongoing medical conditions. Private health insurance is, therefore, essential and should include repatriation to your home country in the event of an emergency.
