    The Health Care System in Thailand

    Thailand’s health care system has come a long way in the last 30 years, rising to 47 in the World Health Organisation (WHO) rankings. Expats working in Thailand are required by law to have health insurance. You can choose from:

    • Public health care – paid for through social security
    • Private health insurance
      • Local insurance
      • International Private Medical Insurance (iPMI)

    Public hospitals can be crowded and often have limited nursing care. Family and friends often carry out basic tasks like feeding and cleaning patients. Expats using the public system report long queues, limited medication and rushed doctor visits. You’re offered a choice of hospitals and picking the right one is essential.

    The next step up from public health care is ‘local insurance’, but it’s often very limited by:
