Endemic infectious diseases: Focusing the world’s attention on neglected killers

When the next infectious disease threatens multiple populations, will we be sufficiently prepared to stop it in its tracks? And while we’re all focused on doing that, will too many citizens around the world suffer from chronic infectious diseases for lack of attention and funding?

Outsized media and public attention on emergent pandemics, such as Zika and Ebola, can divert funding, research and humanitarian efforts aimed at reducing millions of deaths from such other infectious diseases such as malaria, HIV/AIDs, diarrhoeal disease, tuberculosis and lower respiratory tract infections.

These are the primary challenges health professionals struggle with the most — and global mobility makes them all the more likely and urgent.
